Non-surgical options

FDA approved non-surgical options

option1

PROPECIA

Manufactured by Merck & Co. and by far the most effective treatment. A pill taken once a day, PROPECIA lowers the level of androgens, a class of hormones that affects hair loss. Studies have shown up to 66% of men demonstrate some regrowth after 12 – 18 months.

PROPECIA is for men only. Women and children should not use it. PROPECIA must be taken daily. If you stop taking PROPECIA, any result will be gradually lost and within 6 to 12 months you scalp will most likely appear the same as before beginning to take PROPECIA.

option2

ROGAINE (GENERIC NAME: MINOXIDIL)

Manufactured by Pharmacia & Upjohn and available in topical solution form to treat hair loss and baldness. ROGAINE was the first drug approved by the FDA for treatment of androgenic alopecia (hair loss). Minoxidil had been used as a vasodilator drug prescribed as a oral tablet to treat high blood pressure, with side effects that included hair growth and reversal of male pattern baldness. ROGAINE/Minoxidil is used to stimulate hair growth in areas of the scalp that have stopped growing hair.

The exact mechanism of action of minoxidil is not known. Recently ROGAINE in 5% solution became available and has been reported to be much more effective than the normal 2% formulation. Once started, topical minoxidil treatment for androgenetic alopecia is a lifetime commitment if the treatment proves effective. If regular application of topical minoxidil is halted, all hair grown in response to the therapy will be rapidly lost over the next 3 to 6 months.

option3

LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY

Recently approved by the FDA to be safe. Light energy, when delivered at a low power frequency at different wavelengths, has a bio-stimulating effect on the body. Red light, visible to the human eye, is delivered at 660 nanometers and provides topical heat and massages the scalp allowing the pores to open. Infrared light, invisible to the human eye, is delivered at 940 nanometers and transmits deeper beyond the scalp reaching the cell structure below.

The infrared light increases cellular metabolism, blood circulation and the supply of oxygen. The synergistic effect created by the two forms of light allows for an effective producer application and gives the hair its best chance for a healthy growth cycle. It is most effective in the early stages of hair loss and can be used by both men and women.

You should consult your physician regarding all of the options that could be beneficial to you.
